Genetically Modified (GM) Foods have been designed to be hardier, to withstand severe weather, pests, and the stresses of shipping and long-term storage. There is controversy, especially in Europe, about the possible health risks of consuming GM foods, but there is insufficient evidence to say with certainty that GM foods cause or contribute to health problems. In the US, food producers are NOT required to label foods as genetically modified; therefore, unless a product is “Certified Organic,” it may be a GM food. For optimal health, Cheryl Harris, RD, recommends eating more organic foods, more plants, and less processed foods.
