Of The Land is a film about our current food industry in Canada and the United States and how it compares to traditional farming models and smaller organic operations.
Within the last half century, our agriculture and food has changed more than it has changed before in several thousand years. New technologies and scientific ingenuity have given rise to genetically modified organisms (GMO) and other novel foods. Many of these GMO foods are found in most processed foods as sweeteners, oils, and food bases, yet most people have no idea of their existence or how to spot them.
Some people have raised concerns about the safety of GMOs in our food supply, given their incredible dominance in the majority of our diet. Several studies have been published which have shown links between cancers and a diet heavy in GMO foods, yet their use in western culture remains prolific. Some parts of the world, such as the European Union, have banned GMOs from their food supply because of these concerns.
Large chemical companies (Monsanto, Syngenta) own patents on their GMO technology and focus much of their efforts on suing smaller farmers for patent infringement. Traditional, organic farmers, have consistently been under attack by these large corporate farming interests, who seek to dominate the food industry and run family farms out of business.
This film looks at a variety of smaller, organic farming models, and traditional farming methods as an option to combat the industrial (GMO dominated) food juggernaut.
