5. Genetically Modified Animals
It’s not just crops that get genetically modified but animals as well. A genetically modified pig, known as the, enviropig, or the frankenswine by many protesters, contain DNA of mice even genes from E. Coli bacteria. Sounds like a porkchop you don’t want to eat!. This was to help the pig consume higher amounts of phosphorus more efficiently. The pigs were later euthanized when Canada decided to pull funding on the GE experiment. This photo here was made by an artist in order to expose people to bio and genetic engineering. Made of plastic and latex, and it simulates low respiration. This isn’t too far from the truth however and some genetically modified animals might shock you. This photo here, shows you the featherless chicken scientists created in Israel. While it might have a few benefits for humans to be featherless, they’re often more exposed to harsh weather, parasites and can become overly aggressive. Which brings me to my next one.
4. Animals Suffering
Many people believe that genetically modified foods will produce enough food to feed starving people around the world, but this simply isn’t the case. The world already produces enough food to feed 11 billion people, well over the 7.4 billion people people on Earth. The main reason for starvation is from the access distribution of food. Genetically modified plants or animals have not only proved to be hazardous to our health but harmful to animals. GM fish such as salmon, aka the AquAdvantage Salmon often experience severe deformities, infertility, difficulty breathing and die quicker. Since their immunity is much weaker than normal fish, they must be fed a steady diet of antibiotics to stay alive. Here in this photo, you clearly see the difference between a GM salmon which is about twice the size and weighs 2.3 more than a farm salmon! FDA declared these were safe for human consumption.
3. Animals Forced to Eat GMO’s
Keep in mind, it’s not just people in USA or Canada who unknowingly eat genetically modified foods but animals do too. WE mentioned already how animals can become infertile from eating GMO foods but farmers need a cheap food source for their herds of pigs, cows and chickens as well. Many people don’t always realize that these gmo crops are going directly to the animals that make our eggs, provide us with milk, and turn into our meat. 88 percent of our corn. A livestock veterinarians, Dan Skow and Ronald Anders, both describe in detail about the sudden increase of gut bacteria imbalances in animals fed GMOs. Here in this photo you can see the bizarre discoloration of the photo of organ tissue from animals receiving genetically modified food compared to the one on the left who isn’t. In general, farmers have reported better health from non GMO feed.
2. Environmental Risks
With all of these organisms whose DNA has unnaturally been altered, you have to wonder what kind of environmental risks. As more and more species are introduced into the world, other animals are going to have to adapt to those changes. Like how we mentioned the super bugs, some bugs who develop immunity to pesticides when they’re over used. This is true for other organisms like bacteria, fungus, weeds etc. A new bacteria theoretically evolve to kill GMO animals who either need excess antibiotics or we’re modified to be more bacteria resistant, leading to massive plagues and much more deadly than ones we had to deal with in the past. Other environment risks include the excess pesticides seeping to our water supply or polluting our soil. As of now, antibitioc genes don’t appear to pose a threat but we don’t know the possibly negative effects just yet.
1.Just Not Natural
The main reason you oppose genetic engineering is that it’s just not natural, plain and simple. Do the very few, limited benefits of Genetic modifications outweigh the potential future risks and the harmful health effects seen in many studies. The United States has had an enormous increase since the 90’s when gmo food was introduced. Is this all simply a coincidence, no. With genetic modified foods, we are rewriting mother nature’s blueprints. The world isn’t experiencing a famine by any means and we’re not facing desperate situations that requires us to genetically alter our food source. Dozen of countries have noticed the harmful effects of GMO’s, it time for the US to do the same!
